Interview: Jasdeep Kaur
In this section we interview interesting and inspiring people. Today Jasdeep Kaur: You can know Jasdeep from the webshop Villamoo, where she sells cool shoes.
We are curious, who are you, where do you live and where are you from?
My name is Jasdeep Kaur, 24 years old. I was born in Punjab, India! At a young age I moved to Amsterdam with my mother. I then continued to live here. We have now moved three times, but we have always decided to continue living in Amsterdam. I also work in Amsterdam so that is super handy for me.
How would your friends describe you?
My friends describe me I think as CRAZY!
And not entirely unimportant: what is your favorite food?
I really like so much food! What I do think is very important is to live a healthy life. That's why I try to exercise as much as possible and eat as healthy as possible. I need a lot of energy for my work. I prefer to eat pizza and burgers every day, but that will affect my health and my work, unfortunately. ;)
You have a thriving business of your own: Villamoo. How did your company start?
It all started during the Minor Entrepreneurship, an optional track that I chose during my studies. My whole family is in the business so I always had a feeling that I would end up in it too. This finally happened! About two years before I started my minor I had the idea to start a web shop and sell the nicest shoes. My idea was not necessarily to be unique with my collections, but rather with the way of presentation. I truly believe that presenting your products is just as important as the product itself. I then wrote the idea together with two other classmates during the Minor and presented it to the teachers. After some conversations we could finally start!
And how do you feel about having your own company?
Awesome! It sometimes happens that I don't have my day. I really like to close my laptop and take my rest. It sometimes happens that I suddenly feel like working in the middle of the night; so I do. I really like that I can organize my own hours and be creative without limits.
Would you recommend entrepreneurship to others?
It really varies from person to person whether I would recommend it or not. I think that as an entrepreneur you shouldn't be afraid to take risks and certainly shouldn't be afraid to lose money sometimes. It's all part of it. I also think it is very important that as an entrepreneur you should be prepared to work overtime with your work. It may sound rude, but if you don't have all this in you then I wouldn't recommend entrepreneurship either.
What is your life quote?
Live life today.
What would you like to say to your 16-year-old self?
Don't stress so crazy! I used to be a real stress chicken, while I had a very relaxed life. When I compare my youth with my life now, I honestly wonder why I had sleepless nights then.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
First of all, I hope to be in a bigger building! It's starting to get super tight in my warehouse. In addition, I naturally hope that in the future I will also be able to deliver my shoes abroad. Belgium is coming soon anyway! Maybe I will expand my collection and sell even more nice things besides shoes... stay tuned! ;)
